Toledo's Pythian Castle: Shaky Past, Mysterious Future
The Pythian Castle, located at Property located at 801 Jefferson Ave., at the corner of Jefferson Ave. and Ontario St. in downtown Toledo, was built in 1890 by the Knights of Pythias, a men’s organization that is like a secret club. The castle was used as both a meeting place and as a music store. Inside this six-story building are two auditoriums, several ballrooms and many small rooms that were used by practicing musicians. It is a landmark listed on the Register of Historic Places.
Look at the top of the tower. It used to have windows, but they were closed up after a fire.
The castle had to be cleaned in 1972 because the sandstone turned black from pollution. (See if you can spot any marks on the windows from the cleaning.) Workers at that time said they really believed there were ghosts in the two top floors and the tower!
