B’nai Israel Synagogue (now True Church of God of the Apostolic Faith)
Designed by Toledo architects Edward Thal and Sidney E. Aftel, and completed in 1914, B’nai Israel Synagogue and its adjoining annex have been added to the National Register for their local architectural significance. The building departs from the Gothic and classically-inspired synagogues more typical of the time, moving toward a simpler, more modern style reflecting the influence of the American Arts & Crafts Movement and Chicago architects like Louis Sullivan. The congregation moved to a new synagogue in West Toledo in 1955. B’nai Israel is Toledo’s oldest organized Jewish congregation, established in 1860s. The building has served as the True Church of God of the Apostolic Faith since 1964.
