Toledo… Once Claimed by Ohio and Michigan
In 1835, claimed by both Michigan and Ohio because of a boundary dispute, what has gone down in history as the “Toledo War” occurred. Posses made frequent raids and armed forces from Michigan invaded Toledo. Militias from both states were sent but never engaged. The only casualty of the conflict was a Michigan deputy sheriff and the loss of two horses, two pigs and a handful of chickens stolen from an Ohio farm by lost members of the Michigan Militia.
An Act of Congress gave the disputed territory to Ohio in 1836, and in compensation, Michigan was awarded the Upper Peninsula.
