This Spring 2010, The Urban Forest Project will plant banners by local artists and designers on light poles throughout Toledo. Each banner will use the form or metaphor for the tree to make a powerful visual statement about the environment. Together they’ll create a forest of thoughtful images in the urban landscape and raise awareness of sustainability and youth mentoring.

The banners will be hung on light poles in a series of high-traffic locations in the greater Toledo area mid-April, in celebration of the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day. Once the banners come down, they will be recycled into unique tote bags designed exclusively for the project. Sales from the product will benefit the Arts Commission of Greater Toledo (ACGT) to support their Young Artists At Work Program (YAAW).

Mickey Finn’s Pub Showcases Glass Artists at Work

Toledo, Ohio. Mickey Finn announces that his Pub is hosting glass artisans on Wednesday nights through the rest of the summer. Working in a studio set up in Mickey Finn’s Pub event area, local artists produce glass creations through working with glass at the torch and in other formats.

Jeff Mack, a glassmaker and the manager of the Toledo Museum of Art (TMA) glass studio, is coordinating these live glassmaking demonstrations. Referring to successful studio artists and weekend hobbyists, he said, “The one thing that these people all seem to share, and something that always inspires me, is their passion, that thing that drives them to create with such a difficult material.” Since it is more affordable and requires less space to be a flame worker than to use traditional glass furnace techniques, many of these artists set up a home studio. “This gives these artists more time with the glass, more opportunity to feed their passion, and space enough to apply their vision and fantasy to glass,” Mack said.

Mickey Finn’s Pub is pleased to host these local artists with a space to showcase their talents, bringing them out of their basement and garage studios to perform these demonstrations. Finn encourages the public to stop by and check out the flights of fancy formed at the flame.

Wednesday evenings, 9:00 p.m.– midnight, no admission charge.
