The Carnick, Norman, Onodera Exhibition will be on display February 1 thru March 12, 2010 in the Parkwood Gallery. The public is invited to join us for a reception for the exhibition on Friday, February 12 from 6 to 8 pm.

The artworks in this exhibition interact around tenderness tinged with unease. Andrea Carnick’s acrylic paintings are large and abstract, stormy and moody. But too, they are soft and soothing, like the tranquility that comes with or follows a storm. Arranged in pleasant bouquets, the scanned collages of Beverly Norman are soft and subtle, yet include bittersweet tinges of mortality. Composed of digital scans of fallen flower petals and butterflies that no longer flutter, Norman ’s digital works create a dialogue between beauty and decay.

The experimental jewelry of Masako Onodera adds a tender, yet raw three-dimensional element to the exhibition. Onodera’s wraps, rings, and broaches composed of wool, plastic, glass, and other natural and synthetic materials border on stand-alone sculptures that possess a near living stillness. Her works bring to mind odd but beautiful forms in nature, seemingly intestinal, or like a mussle-ridden rope; suggesting growth both natural and out of control.

The Parkwood Gallery is open Monday thru Friday 8:30 am – 4:30pm and is located at 1838 Parkwood Avenue, Suite 120 off of Monroe Street in Downtown Toledo.

A great artist, a great assimilator, and hugely prolific, Francisco Toledo is inspired by Mexican culture, his native state of Oaxaca, and his Zapotic heritage. Using surrealist influences and a deep knowledge of printmaking technique—experienced during a five-year stay in Europe where he worked in the shop of the eccentric British master, Stanley William Hayter— Toledo ’s art shows an appreciation for the aesthetics of nature.

Indigenous animals, whose continence often invoke a sensual mystery (bats, iguanas, toads, and coyotes), interact with human beings in a world where all are equal in nature and equally disregarding of nature’s laws. Indeed, Toledo ’s works are records of things and beings in dreamlike scenarios, both menacing and playful, full of pattern and movement. Toledo is arguably the most important Latino artist of his generation and is certainly one of the greatest contemporary printmakers. IMAGE: Untitled (detail). Etching.

The men of the Roman army have discovered that during their absence their wives have faithlessly betrayed them – all but Lucretia. The young prince Tarquinius plots to test her fidelity. Hauntingly beautiful music is married to an ancient Roman tale.

It was a combination of economic realities and aesthetic preferences that encouraged Britten to develop the concept for Lucretia. In the opera, he employs a small cast without chorus and an orchestra of just thirteen players. There is, however, no loss of color and atmosphere – indeed the pared-down textures produced an intensification of Britten’s operatic vision to realize this intense and dramatic story.

Lucretia was first presented in 1946 at the Glyndebourne Festival in England. The story is simple and brutally direct. The solder Tarquinius vows to steal the honor of Lucretia, who is known to be the most virtuous woman in Rome. The story is based on an actual historical event that occurred in ancient Rome around 500 B.C. This event is believed to be the impetus for the founding of the Roman republic, replacing the monarchy that had been in place for centuries. Throughout history, political figures (in this case, Junius) have used tragic personal events to fuel rebellion and change.

There is a wonderful simplicity in the life of the women in this opera. The beautiful calmness of the women contrasts with the harshness of the world of the men. Britten chose to write for a lower voice in the leading female role – probably because lower voices seem much calmer and more grounded. A higher voice wouldn’t give Lucretia the gravitas to convey the easy and comfortable relationship she has with her husband Collatinus.

The story of Lucretia is timeless, as many opera stories are. It deals with someone whose whole life and worldview is shattered by an act of violence. The theatricality of the opera and the role of Lucretia have incredible appeal. While you may not be familiar with this opera, it will definitely speak to you on its own terms.

Mark your calendars! The Mix Twenty10 is coming!

The Mix Twenty10 will focus on the future—from the 1970’s perspective, that is. We are taking over the Secor Building once again, but this year we are thinking about white leather boots, neon pinks and greens, and lots of silver for sparkle.

With a look back to the fashions and trends of the 70’s, we will transform the Secor Building in downtown Toledo into the party space of the future. Scheduled for Saturday, March 20, the event will once again feature delectable grazing stations, a silent auction featuring the art work of the area’s best artists, and top shelf entertainment, all adding up to a terrific evening of diversion for our enthusiastic community of arts supporters.
