On Saturday, October 1st the historic barn located in Goll Woods State Nature Preserve will be open for the public to explore. This event is being held in conjunction with the celebration of the 175th anniversary of Lockport, Ohio and will include special tours of the Goll Barn and an afternoon nature walk for guests to enjoy.
From noon – 2:30 p.m. guests will be able to tour the two levels of this historic barn, which is now handicapped accessible. The triple-jettied outshot barn is very similar to one that French settlers may have had on their European farms. Although the Goll Barn was built at the end of the Civil War, it was certainly changed over time. Those changes have been preserved so that the barn can tell the history of agricultural technology over the past century and a half. The preservation of the barn was made possible with partial funding from the State of Ohio.
Local historians will be on hand to answer questions and explain the history of the Goll Barn. They will also share stories about the Goll family and discuss how the barn changed over its 146 year history and how agriculture in this area changed as well.
Another highlight of this special day is the opportunity to enjoy a guided nature walk through this old-growth forest. At 1:00 and 2:30 p.m. nature walks will be led by Ron Dilbone, local naturalist and retired biology teacher.
While walking through one of the least disturbed woodlands known to remain in extreme northwestern Ohio, nature walk participants are sure to see an abundance of magnificent trees that are 200 to 400 years old, a variety of native shrubs and wildflowers.
To participate in the nature walk, guests should meet Ron in the parking lot located on the east side of Co. Rd. 26 between Co. Rd. E and F. Those wishing to go on the walks should wear boots, or waterproof footwear, since the woods are one of the best examples of the swamp forest that covered much of northwest Ohio prior to European settlement and the drainage and clearing of the area for farming.
