Call it Dixieland, Traditional Jazz, or New Orleans Jazz; it’s hot, exciting music – and it’s still very much alive. Ralph Grugel and his Eagle Jazz Band entertained Cleveland fans for years. Sadly, Ralph died in 2005, but his brand of hot jazz lives on at the festival named in his honor. GRUGELFEST 2016 will be held on the weekend of September 9-10-11 at the Park Inn by Radisson Hotel, 101 N Summit Street in downtown Toledo. Six great bands from all over America will perform during 4 sessions, starting at
6 PM on Friday night.
Bands performing at GRUGELFEST 2016 include the internationally-known Yerba Buena Stompers featuring Ida Blue. The New Orleans Nighthawks will also perform, as well as Red Lehr’s Powerhouse Five from St. Louis, Missouri and Jon Seiger’s All Stars from Rochester, New York. Ohio will be represented by Toledo’s Cakewalkin’ Jass Band, Cincinnati’s Buffalo Ridge Jazz Band, and ragtime pianist Kenan Leslie. Special guest Duke Heitger will also return on trumpet.
There will be a pre-festival party on Thursday night, September 8, at Ye Olde Durty Bird, Downtown Toledo’s Gastropub. Music will be provided by Ragtime Rick and the Chefs of Dixieland and other guest musicians.
On Sunday morning, September 11, a 5K run/walk will be held to support the Dyslexia Education Training Center. Details are available from Dave’s Running Shop. Then at 10:45 AM, a Dixieland Worship Service will be held at Bethel Lutheran Church, 1853 South Avenue (transportation provided for festival goers).
Tickets for GRUGELFEST 2016 are on sale at the Huntington Center Box Office (419 321-5007) and also at ticketmaster. Weekend passes are available, as well as individual session tickets.
Profits from GRUGELFEST 2016 will benefit the Dyslexia Education Training Center of Northwest Ohio, an organization which teaches children with dyslexia how to read.
